The Prudential Spirit of Community Awards honors middle level and high school students for making meaningful contributions to their communities through volunteer service.
Applications are now open for 2020 awards!
Now through November 5, 2019, students in grades 5-12 are invited to apply for 2020 Prudential Spirit of Community Awards if they have volunteered within the past year. Adventures in Biotechnology Program DescriptionConduct a hands-on lab project, meet and interact with scientists and other biotech professionals and get an inside view of a biotech company! You will learn about the drug development process while also learning and doing a series of biotech laboratory techniques. Each day will focus on lab work, but there will also be opportunities to hear from and speak with employees from a wide range of departments. The laboratory component for most of our sessions will focus on modifying DNA in order to produce and purify green fluorescent protein! To accomplish this, you will learn and do the following techniques: bacterial transformation, site-directed mutagenesis, protein extraction, affinity purification and PAGE. But don’t worry if you are not familiar with these lab techniques - that’s what you will learn during the program!
Admissions/Application Process The application period will run from Monday, February 25, 2019 at 9:00 a.m. Eastern Time and will close on Monday, March 11, 2019 at 11:59 p.m. Eastern Time. The student applying for the program must fill out the application; parents are not allowed to submit an application on behalf of their child.

- an opportunity to study abstract ideas through an examination of the nature of philosophy
- an opportunity to learn more about values and ideas that influence individual character

We invite you to come celebrate National Biomechanics Day (NBD) at NC State University. What, you might ask, is biomechanics? Biomechanics is the fundamental example of STEM and STEAM educational initiatives. It combines Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Mathematics into one awe-inspiring, jaw-dropping, human-enhancing, creative endeavor.
Students love it, are amazed by it, and are drawn to it. Please join us in celebrating the breakthrough science of the 21st century. The 2018 National Biomechanics Day will be held on April 11 at NC State's Centennial Campus. It will consist of lab tours in the Biomedical Engineering Department and the state-of-the-art Hunt Library, as well as an expo session where students can explore numerous demos and hands-on stations relating to biomechanical and biomedical phenomena.

As part of the GEOPATHS project, the Department of Marine, Earth and Atmospheric Sciences (MEAS) at North Carolina State University will host a series of open house events to provide opportunities for high school to learn about research and careers in the geosciences. They will have opportunities to interact with faculty from MEAS to learn about how geoscience is being applied to answer local, national, and global research questions.
Our first open house - Discovering Earthquakes, Exploring Planets and Finding Lost Graves - is scheduled for 5-7 PM on November 9th in Jordan Hall on the NCSU campus. This are intended to be small group, hands-on type events where students will get a chance to do something, rather than sit and listen to people talk. Details of this and later events can be found here. Please encourage any science-friendly students who might be interested to apply.
The open house events are just one component in GEOPATHS programming. Each year we will also support Exploring the Earth Summer Camp, a geojourney field trip, and summer workshops for educators (support provided). More details of these programs will follow on the website in the next few months.

If you are interested in attending, here is the information for the next evening: Friday, October 13, for “A World with Bees.”This presentation will take a look at the many native bees found in our own backyards and follow the life of a beekeeper throughout the calendar year. The program will be presented by Chris Apple, a Durham County Master Gardener and a certified Journeyman beekeeper working on her Master. She has kept honeybees for about 6 years. She is currently the Outreach Director for the Orange County Beekeepers Association.
We will meet at 5:30 in the State Dining Room (3rd floor, west end of Morehead Planetarium on the UNC campus). Pizza and snacks will carry us until our program starts at 6:00, ending around 7:15.

- a six-week summer residential enrichment program for academically talented rising seniors (current juniors); rising juniors (current sophomores) in the visual/performing arts area may also apply
- a non-credit academic enrichment experience for 800 nominated North Carolina high school students, funded by the state legislature and conducted at two college sites (Salem College and Meredith College)
- a curriculum including study in English, Spanish and French, mathematics, natural science, social science or art, choral and instrumental music, dance and drama
- an opportunity to study abstract ideas through an examination of the nature of philosophy
- an opportunity to learn more about values and ideas that influence individual character
WHO CAN ATTEND????
- legal residents of North Carolina who meet academically or intellectually gifted criteria through specific test scores
- students who are nominated by teachers (a supporting letter required) then selected first through the superintendent’s office and second by the state department of education
- students who demonstrate high academic aptitude, high academic achievement and either strong scholastic performance or talent in the visual/performing arts area evidenced by audition before judges (in February at Meredith College)

Durham Health and Human Services Complex invites you to participate in the 2017 Kickoff to College & Career on September 16, 2017 at 9am at the Durham Health and Human Services Complex. Families can attend and learn what it takes to get into college, about different careers, and how to get involved in the community via service opportunities! The day will include breakout sessions & a college/community fair. We are expecting more than 400 students and parents from the Triangle & surrounding areas. THIS EVENT IS FREE AND OPEN TO THE PUBLIC.
